How the Toronto Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) Works

The City of Toronto has established an incredible financing tool for local homeowners to modernize their home energy infrastructure. Through the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), you can access low-interest funding up to $125,000 with competitive, fixed interest rates starting at 3.08% and flexible repayment terms up to 20 years to install a complete solar energy system, advanced battery storage, and a smart electrical panel upgrade.  Since solar tends to have around a 10-year payback period, the 10-year loan term payments are very similar to the Hydro bill they are replacing, but since solar panels last for decades, you will eventually have free energy coming from your roof!

Because this program utilizes a Local Improvement Charge (LIC) structure, the loan is not tied to your personal credit score or debt-to-income ratios—it is attached directly to the property tax bill itself. Best of all, if you ever decide to sell your home, the remaining balance automatically transfers over to the new buyer. You only pay for the clean energy infrastructure while you live in the home and enjoy the immediate monthly utility savings. To qualify, you must own a low-rise residential property in Toronto (with a postal code starting with "M"), be current on your property taxes and utility accounts, secure written consent from your mortgage lender, and complete a standard EnerGuide home energy assessment before your installation begins.
