How the Durham Greener Homes Program Works

The Regional Municipality of Durham has launched an incredible incentive for local homeowners to upgrade their energy infrastructure. Through the Durham Greener Homes program, you can access up to $125,000 at a fixed 2% interest rate over 15 years to install a complete solar energy system, battery storage, and a smart electrical panel upgrade. Because this is a Local Improvement Charge (LIC), the loan is not tied to your personal credit—it is attached directly to your property tax bill. Best of all, if you decide to sell your home, the remaining balance automatically transfers to the new owner. You only pay for the clean energy upgrades while you actually live there and enjoy the lower hydro bills. To qualify, you must own the home, live in the Durham Region, and complete a standard EnerGuide energy assessment before the installation begins.
